A Guide to Buying an Aircraft Vac

What’s important when buying a vacuum cleaner specifically for aircraft use? It’s a good question, especially in situations where turnaround and reliability mean everything. So let’s take a look at the key things to consider when making such a purchase.

Run time

It’s important that your aircraft vac keeps on going to get the job done in your short timeframe. If you’re going for a battery operated model, always check the runtime of the battery. You should be looking for something in the vicinity of 40 minutes.

Some models will store two batteries so you have a back-up, crucial if you are hopping from one aircraft to another in a short time span. Also check out the charge time. Too long and it could cost you in turnaround when it matters most.

Some models, such as the I-Vac Battery Operated Vacuum Cleaner, have a smart charger that shows the voltage and a time clock, making it easier for you to see how long you’ve got till full charge.

If you don’t want to rely on battery charge, go for a model that runs on the aircraft’s power supply instead, but make sure the machine is designed specifically for the aircraft current: a regular vacuum won’t do.

Mobility

The weight and size of your aircraft vacuum cleaner are key considerations. Can you easily lift the machine up the stairs and onto the aircraft? Does it manoeuvre well through the aisles, under seats and into small spaces?

Consider this when you are making your choice. If you hone your search specifically to aircraft spec machines, you should tick all these boxes.

Toolkit

What does the aircraft vacuum cleaner come with? The toolkit supplied could make all the difference.

For example, the Numatic ANV180s Aircraft Vacuum Cleaner comes with an orange, hi-vis anti-kink cable; a full aluminium kit; a large Tritex filter and five HepaFlo bags. Always check precisely what you are getting when you buy your aircraft vacuum cleaner.

Health and safety

Think about your operatives and how handling a vacuum cleaner within limited spaces and up and down staircases could affect them. You may wish to consider a backpack style cleaner.

The Pacvac Superpro 700 is a battery operated, backpack style vacuum cleaner that is ergonomically designed for the ultimate in comfort and safety in use. There’s no lifting of heavy or cumbersome machines and a smooth and effortless clean is guaranteed every time. It’s lighter than any other backpack cleaner on the market and has a patented Hypercone Hepa filter system for maximum efficiency. Two batteries, each with a 30-minute run time, deliver excellent reliability.

The Numatic Rsav200 Aircraft Spec is another ergonomically designed backpack style machine featuring a comfortable harness that provides the operator with good mobility into awkward to reach locations.

Wet or dry?

If you want complete flexibility, consider a wet and dry model. The Numatic Awv380 Aircraft Spec Wet Vac uses the aircraft’s power supply. It acts as both a regular dry aircraft vac, and doubles as a wet vac for dealing with spillages and stains.

Battery Powered Vacuum Cleaners: The Benefits for Commercial Cleaners

Whilst battery powered vacuum cleaners have received their fair share of bad press, mostly due to a lack of operating time before the power drains, the good news is that things have now moved on technology wise, and there are now a raft of tangible benefits to adopting the battery vacuum cleaner as part of your commercial cleaning armoury.

Here are two of the key reasons why battery powered vacuum cleaners are becoming the first choice within the commercial cleaning sector:

Reason 1: Free Movement

For high rise buildings, or any other type of premises where the management of power cords is a hindrance, the battery powered vacuum cleaner literally frees the cleaner to move wherever they wish, especially when it’s a back-pack model such as the Pacvac Superpro. This is particularly beneficial where there is a lack of power outlets, especially where there are lifts and stairwells that need to be vacuumed. Even if you do have several metres of power cord to allow freer movement, the trip hazard that results from stretching it from one end of a workspace to another could result in serious issues.

The flexibility of the battery powered vacuum cleaner also makes it ideal for situations where a clean-up is needed urgently and in heavily populated surroundings, such as public buildings, hospitals, restaurants and bars.

Reason 2: Safety

We mentioned trip hazards which can result from stretching cords across long distances or in populated areas. Another issue with stretched out cords is damage. Picture the work environment, with people, equipment and the like coming and going.

A vacuum cleaner cord is stretched out across the floor. An office chair runs over it, or a trolley, or a pallet truck. It is not unusual for cords to sustain damage in this way, which throws up a safety issue and renders the vacuum cleaner unusable until it has undergone servicing and repair. Whereas with a battery powered vacuum cleaner, all you have to worry about is keeping it charged.

Battery Powered Vacuum Cleaners: Recommendations

There are various battery powered vacuum cleaner models on the market that are suitable for commercial use. Here are our pick of some of the best:

I-Vac Battery Operated Vacuum Cleaner

The I-Vac battery operated tub vac has the longest run time of any machine currently on the market as of October 2016. It’s a cord-free, robust and compact 9 litre tub vac offering 40 minutes of run time per battery, and the cleaner can store two batteries so you’ll get over an hour of cleaning time. It takes one hour to charge and comes with a full tool kit.

Numatic Battery Henry Tub Vac Nbv190

The battery powered Henry tub vac offers 30 minutes cleaning time and takes 3.5 hours to charge. There’s a full accessory kit included and the machine offers the benefit of HEPA-Flo filtration.

The Pacvac Superpro 700 battery powered back pack vacuum cleaner offers the ultimate in flexibility. Its battery is lighter than any other on the market and the patented 'Hypercone' Hepa Filter system delivers full suction the whole time the bag is filling. Thanks to the unique Pacvac harness, the machine is comfortable to use and allows the user to adopt correct posture. Comes complete with a full tool kit, a spare filter bag and 5 paper bags together with two batteries, each of which provides 30 minutes of cleaning time. Charging time is around 2 hours.
